Praxis Module III

Harmony? Bach Mozart Beethoven

Harmony? Bach Mozart Beethoven

Some music is more accessible, more easily the backdrop of other life activities. This course will help students listen rigorously to music often called ‘the iron repertory’: Bach Mozart Beethoven (BMB). Holger Jetter will lay the foundations of psychoacoustic perception – the science of sensation that sound produces – before considering musical culture – the links between aesthetics, place, and time. Paying mind to musical process – structure, harmony, and melody – we’ll be prepared to listen to select compositions of Bach (the divine and mathematical), Mozart (the angelic realm), and Beethoven (the transformation of the human). We’ll hear the expansive potential of music beyond entertainment.
